What is dry brushing? How and why you should be doing it!

If you follow me on Instagram, you probably know how much I am loving dry brushing! I have been dry brushing every single day for a month and a half, and I am completely obsessed with it now. There are so many benefits, many of which I notice every single day. Plus, I love the ritual. It’s a self-care method that I cannot go without!

But what is dry brushing?

Using a natural bristle “dry brush” like the one I use (which I absolutely love, by the way!) all you do is brush your skin while it’s dry (I like to do it before a shower) toward your heart.

Benefits of dry brushing

  • great method of exfoliation
  • increases circulation
  • boosts energy
  • stimulates lymphatic system
  • unclogs pores
  • can help improve digestion
  • can reduce the appearance of pores and cellulite
  • improves skin texture
  • helps to ease stress and tension

I have seen great improvement to my skins texture and the appearance of pores with facial dry brushing. I love how energized and overall GOOD I feel after dry brushing. It’s a feeling I have come to crave. Typically, I have poor circulation and my hands an feet are always freezing. I have noticed that since dry brushing, my circulation has improved DRASTICALLY. It’s been amazing!

How to dry brush

For my body, I use the large body brush (with or without the handle) and move in big strokes toward my heart. I do this before or shower, or early on in the morning. After dry brushing/showering I use organic coconut oil or Cocokind Skincare oils to moisturize.

For my face, I use the smaller facial dry brush. I wash my face, then gently dry brush using the same method I do when jade rolling. Then I use toner and moisturizer.

I always follow up dry brushing with drinking a huge glass of water.

What dry brush am I using?

I bought the Belula dry brushes on Amazon after a friend recommended that brand. It’s a great price and comes with the body brush, facial brush, a removable handle for the body brush (great for hard to reach places on your back!), a travel bag for your brushes, and shower gloves. It’s only $19.95 which I felt was an incredible price!

Dry brushing is a pretty small task for the benefits it brings. It’s something that is a daily act of self care that I always feel I can “make time for.” I feel so amazing after dry brushing and it really only takes a few minutes. I mentioned that I dry brush before a shower, but I know many people who prefer to dry brush after, and that works too! I even dry brush on the days I don’t shower, because #hippielife and I don’t shower every day. 🤷🏼‍♀️

JADE ROLLING BENEFITS AND HOW-TO

Jade rolling is something I quickly grew fond of doing. If you are looking for a simple and inexpensive spa treatment for home use, look no further than a jade roller! The benefits are endless, so jade rolling is truly for everyone.

I have been using a roller from Jade Roller Beauty and I love it. Great quality and a great company. I have been really impressed and would 100% recommend buying from them.

what is a jade rolling?

Jade is a stone used in Chinese medicine that helps cleanse and drain the lymphatic system.

benefits of jade rolling

  • clears toxins
  • tones facial muscles
  • improves skin elasticity
  • promotes lymphatic drainage
  • helps clear breakouts on jaw and chin
  • stimulates blood flow
  • reduces puffiness
  • stimulates collagen production
  • can minimize pore size
  • headache relief
  • boosts circulation
  • reduces inflammation
  • helps clear sinus congestion

how to use your jade roller

After regular cleansing, exfoliating, masking, toning, etc….

  1. apply moisturizer or face serum
  2. forehead and temples: start with the large side of your roller in the center of your forehead closest to your hair line. roll the stone gently, moving down toward your ears, to your temple. always move outwards, away from your face. repeat 4-7 times, covering you whole forehead. move slowly, without applying too much pressure. repeat on the other side of your forehead.
  3. eyes: using the small end of your roller, roll gently over eyelids and under eye areas. starting in the inner corners, rolling out to your ears.
  4. nose and cheeks: start in the center and roll away from your nose, toward your cheeks. roll over cheeks toward your ears. again, repeat 4-7 times.
  5. chin and lips: using the same technique, roll gently across lips and chin toward ears.
  6. jawline: roll gently along jawline to your earlobes. then, starting at the chin, use a sweeping motion upward toward cheekbones, then out to your ears.
  7. neck: start at the top and roll downwards to collar bones.
  8. rinse, apply toner and moisturizer (I love using this after a mask + jade rolling)

cleaning and storing

after use, wipe roller off with a damp cloth and dry. do not use hot water, harsh cleaners or soaps. I recommend storing in the fridge, but you can store it wherever you like and place it in the freezer a few minutes before each use if you like it cold. it doesn’t have to be cold, but I like it that way.

how often to use

you can jade roll 2-4 times a day, but I personally use it once a day. I love it so much though, that if I had more time, you would catch me doing this 4 times a day! each session will take about 5-10 minutes but you could do it in as little as 2 if you didn’t have much time but still wanted to squeeze it into your routine.

after-care

your skin should be flush after. your body will be detoxifying so you will want to hydrate with TONS of water! flushing with water will help this process a lot.

I would love to hear from you! have you tried jade rolling?

NON TOXIC SWAP OUTS

The bathroom is one place we don’t always think of that’s lurking with toxins. Convtional beauty and hygiene products are full of harmful ingredients, so if you haven’t swapped them out already, I’m challenging you to clean out your bathrooms today. Toss out all of the products that aren’t truly clean (watch out for those green washed items! They’re unfortunately everywhere) and replace them with something so much better for you and the environment!

  • Toothpaste. You can read my post here that goes into all the chemical ingredients in conventional toothpaste. I recommend a swap out for Davids or Dr. Bronners. For a baby toothpaste, we really like Jack and Jill.
  • Deodorant. I like making my own (recipe here) but if you’re not into that I recommend Pachi. They have men’s and women’s, they smell amazing and they actually work great!
  • Sunscreen. Just like many things, conventional sunscreen is chock-full or harmful toxins. I love BRAND and it works really well too. I would also recommend Badger’s. They both perform amazing and are very clean.
  • Lotion. I think here are a lot of non toxic lotions easily available, but I really like Acure and Dr. Bronners.
  • Shampoo. Read my post about oil training, and then swap out that toxic shampoo for Wild Willow (local company!) or Griffin.
  • Hand soap. There are quite a few decent hand soaps at regular stores now, but if you want something super-clean that smells amazing, works amazing, and lasts awhile I highly recommend Kosmotology.
  • Dry shampoo. Not many people know that there is a clean version of dry shampoo out there! I have good news for you, this one from Green and Gorgeous not only works incredibly well, but for me it doubles as finishing powder (for those rare times I wear makeup) and one thing lasts a really long time!
  • Eye makeup remover. I love this little kit from BRAND. It’s a great swap out choice for a clean product and the cloth is so soft it feels like clouds are washing your mascara off.
  • Skin care. You guys know my deep love (possibly obsession) with Cocokind Skincare. If you’re using a conventional cleanser on your face, swap it out for this brand. Their cleansers are oil based which is ideal for all skin types, yes even oily! If you are already using a natural oil cleanser, I still would recommend trying out Cocokind. They’re organic, well-sourced, high performing, and every item is priced so amazing!
  • Makeup. Head over to tour closest natural grocery store and pick up some cacao powder. This is now your eyebrow powder and bronzer. I also really like the makeup made by 100% Pure and BRAND.

There are so many non toxic choices out there, and many of them are great. Do what works for you. These are purely my recommendations for products I know and use.

These products are also SUPER easy to find. I like to purchase my stuff from The Choosy Chick because they carry all the brands I love in one place, making purchases simple and quick.

Here’s to getting all the toxic products out of your bathrooms, and a wonderful Thursday.
