3 THINGS TO SWAP OUT IN YOUR ORAL CARE ROUTINE

Oral care is so important, and it’s one of the top things I suggest when people ask me what to switch out from conventional to non-toxic items. Toothpastes, mouthwash, even floss can contain so many toxins and even ruin the balance of bacteria in your mouth causing bad breath and dental decay.
Toothpaste Toxins:

Triclosan which contains endocrine-disrupting chemicals, and links to cancer and hormonal disruptions.

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate is what causes traditional toothpastes to foam up. The funny thing about this chemical is that its known to enhance bitter flavors, which is why you will notice foods tasting so gross after you’ve brushed (not the case with natural brands). This chemical is also a strong skin irritant, causing canker sores. It is a registered insecticide with toxic affects on marine life and the environment.

Aspartame is a common artificial sweetener found in many things, including toothpastes. First, I want to point out that when you google the word, it claims it is “medication.” Aspartame contains a methyl ester which forms methanol. Methanol in humans is really dangerous, traveling into the brain where it is converted into formaldehyde. This causes nausea, vertigo, ear ringing, dizziness, behavior changes, gastrointestinal issues, shooting pains in arms/legs, numbness, chills, memory problems, and more.

Other harmful ingredients include DEA, fluoride, propylene glycol, and microbeads. These things can cause real damage to us and the environment.

Other Toxins in Mouthwash and Floss:

Chlorhexidine, alcohol, oraldene, parabens, chlorides, and methyl salicylate to name a few. These things can damage your health, release toxins into your blood stream, cancer-causing, and even ruin the oral microbiome in your mouth.

I know that its all a lot of information to take in and can feel overwhelming, so I am going to stop there.

When I learned about all these dangers lurking in my oral care routine, I started looking into natural products and swapped everything out. My routine is really simple, but depending on your needs there are so many amazing products out there that are natural and work really well.

Natural toothpaste swap outs: Earthpaste is a great natural toothpaste with redmond clay, essential oils, real salt, and you can get it with or without xylitol. Uncle Harry’s alkalizing toothpaste is another great option. If you are needing something more for your teeth (cavities, damaged oral microbiome) I recommend using this remineralization kit.

Natural floss swap outs: This Dr, Tung’s floss is my personal favorite. You can also find it at a natural grocery store like Sprout’s.

Natural mouthwash swap out: There are great natural mouthwash options out there (like this one) but I am really loving this Yala Mouthwash right now. I love oil pulling, something that is so great for your oral health, and this stuff makes it so much easier to do because they taste so much better than straight coconut oil! I love that Yala includes essential oils that also promote healthy teeth and gums!

A few other great oral care products:

Dr. Tung’s Tongue Cleaner

Toothbrush Sanitizer

Plaque Remover Sticks

NUTRITIONAL YEAST BENEFITS & RECIPES

Good morning babes! I hope everyone had a beautiful weekend and a mindful Monday. 😉

Nutritional yeast is a big staple in my house. You might be wondering what nutritional yeast is. It is a dehydrated naturally occurring yeast grown on molasses We are all dairy free over here, and nutritional yeast is a great way to add nutrients with a cheesy flavor.

Nutritional Yeast Benefits:

– High in all B vitamins, especially vitamin B6

– Antiviral and antibacterial properties

-Good source of protein

-Aids in digestion

-Good source of fiber, thiamin, biotin, niacin, pantothenic acid, phosphorus, zinc, selenium, molybdenum.

-Low in sodium

Nutritional yeast is extremely versatile, and can be added into ANYTHING you are eating. Here are some of my families favorite ways to use nutritional yeast. And yes, my kids LOVE it!

-Add 2 T into your smoothie (you won’t get a cheesy taste, but rather enhance your smoothies natural flavors.

-Sprinkle on top of all your meals (salads, soups, pasta, veggie bowls, tacos, you name it and nutritional yeast is a great addition!)

-Use it as a thickening agent in soups!

-To make vegan cheesy kale chips.

-To make various vegan cheese and cheese sauce recipes

-Add it into homemade vegan dressings for added nutrients.

-Sprinkle on eggs and quiche.

-“Cheesy” roasted chickpeas (and veggies too!)

-Replacement for added salt.

-I can keep going on and on… but you guys, you can add this stuff into e v e r y t h i n g. And I mean that. I mean it might seem weird to put in onto of your chocolate chip cookies…. but I won’t judge you!

I also have to include these two CRAZY easy and fast recipes that we use in our family all the time. These are two of my kids most favorite foods!

Vegan buttered noodles

-add avocado or coconut oil to cooked and drained pasta. Sprinkle in nutritional yeast, garlic salt, and pepper. I add in probably 8 tablespoons of yeast when I make this because I make a big batch!

-add in your favorite roasted veggies! Peas, peppers, celery, broccoli, and squash are some of our personal favorites!

Yeast Popcorn

-using an airpop popcorn machine, pop some fresh gmo-free popcorn!

-melt coconut oil and pour over the popcorn in small batches.

-sprinkle and stir in garlic salt, pepper, and as much nutritional yeast as desired.

-tip: for a spicy version, sprinkle on some cayenne powder!

There are a ton of nutritional yeast brands out there, and I have used a few. But after discovering that some brands add in synthetic vitamins and minerals to their nutritional yeast, I turned to Sari Foods brand. They are 100% all natural, non gmo, kosher, non toxic, absolutely no additives, and as good as can be! I recommend purchasing through Amazon here:

//ws-na.amazon-adsystem.com/widgets/q?ServiceVersion=20070822&OneJS=1&Operation=GetAdHtml&MarketPlace=US&source=ac&ref=tf_til&ad_type=product_link&tracking_id=naturallychel-20&marketplace=amazon&region=US&placement=B00PJ3IPMI&asins=B00PJ3IPMI&linkId=1f0c5ad0eb2bfbc6d7c592327fcce503&show_border=false&link_opens_in_new_window=false&price_color=333333&title_color=0066c0&bg_color=ffffff

Have you or do you use nutritional yeast? I would love to hear your favorite use for it! And if you are not already using Sari Foods nutritional yeast, I definitely recommend it! The Amazon price is so so good, too!

TOXIN-FREE DIY DEODORANT

Aluminum, Propylene Glycol, Phthalates, Parabens.

Just a few of the common toxins found in common deodorants. In case you don’t know why you should avoid these, or need a little refresher:

Aluminum: linked to breast and prostate cancer, and increased risk of Alzheimer’s.

Propylene Glycol: damages central nervous system, liver, and heart.

Phthalates: increased risk for cell mutation, birth defects, and hormonal problems.

Parabens: organ toxicity, birth defects, and disrupts hormones causing early puberty and increased risk of hormonal cancers.

And those are just a few.

Your skin absorbs toxins within seconds, and the harm those can cause are really overwhelming. There are some great natural deodorants out there, but for me it’s something I like to make. I have tried several natural brands, some are better than others and you just have to find what works for you.

This is a really simple recipe and only takes a few minutes to whip up. Plus, it lasts a really long time! That all makes it worth it for me to make myself. I love that I have control over the ingredients, and can adjust it where and when needed. This way I get to choose my own scent (or no scent!) too, which I love!

DIY Toxin-free deodorant

Why these ingredients?

Baking Soda is great for odor and sweat control.

Coconut Oil is anti-bacterial and anti-fungal.

Arrowroot Powder is great for absorbing moisture.

Bentonite Clay is detoxifying and moisture absorbing.

Tea Tree Oil is a strong anti-bacterial.

I hope you guys love this recipe as much as I do. It is completely natural, organic (I use and recommend using organic ingredients!) and free of any potential toxins. It really works so great, and one batch lasts a long time. I store mine in a wide mouth mason jar and use a few dabs from my finger to apply. It rubs on smooth and easy!

Disneyland Tips

Good morning! As many of you know, we recently went to Disneyland. I first have to say that we live completely clean, natural, organic, green, anything else you want to call it. But I definitely think there are times we need to let all the obsessing go, and just enjoy life as it is. Avoiding EVERYTHING can be really hard at times (like on vacation…) because there are unhealthy things e v e r y w h e r e.

So that is what we did, for one week, we weren’t concerned about all the horrible things that may or may not be lurking, because it would have been exhausting and taken away from the experience we wanted our kids to be able to have. I wish everything was 100% organic and clean, but it’s not.

TIPS FOR THE ORGANIC LIVING FAMILY:

1.bring your own snacks and food into the park

2.bring your own water!

3.if you do eat out, and avoid certain foods by choice (or allergy!) the hostess asks before you are even seated, and they bring you an allergy menu. Every place has great alternatives and a TON of vegetarian/vegan choices. They are very thorough about this, so you know you can trust it!

4.let yourself off the hook of being totally organic for a minute. I know how hard that is and trust me I cringed getting our kids some of the things we did, but it was ONE time. And it wasn’t TOO overboard, either. They ate churros, and some cookies, etc. There are some decent options there that I was really okay with, for one time. 😉

5. be sure you bring your own organic sunscreen, because you won’t find any there! We were so happy to have our Raw Elements Sunscreen that works really well, too!

6.for all my fellow booch lovers out there, glass bottles are not allowed in the park, so you better drink it up before you get there… or they will have you pour it into another cup before you go in.

TIPS FOR BUDGET AND TIME SAVINGS:

1.again, bring your own food and water.

2. pack a bag full of dress-up clothes and items and let your kids wear those each day instead of buying ALL the ones they have out. I recommend The Little Dress Up Shop for a great price and quality.

3.buy souvenirs from amazon before you go to the parks

4. when you do purchase stuff in the park, be sure you bring them with you the following days! Also, you can check your bags of purchases all over, so you don’t have to carry them around or worry about them being stolen.

5. use the Disneyland app for a map, wait times, character spotting, etc. This is your total guide!

6. there are great live shows and things like that on both sides of the park (Fantasy Faire for princess storytelling shows (DL), Enchanted Tiki Room (DL), Turtle Talk with Crush (CA), Frozen Show (CA),  and Disney Junior Live Show (CA), etc.) these are GREAT for a break. Our two toddlers loved all these shows, and they were so great for a little rest for them.

There are so many tips and guides out there that it can be really overwhelming. I wanted to keep this as short and simple as possible, because that’s how I like it! 🙂 Another thing I wanted to share was about our hotel situation.

We booked through Get Away Today by recommendation from everyone, working with them was great. However, the hotel they booked us was REALLY horrible. It was so close to the hotel, which was amazing and exactly what we wanted, but the hotel itself was not good at all. After the first night they switched our rooms, and it was honestly no better. The shower barely worked, it was loud, and the building itself was just awful.

I definitely recommend staying FAR AWAY from The Castle Inn and Suites. If you book through Get Away Today, be sure you tell them you DO NOT want that hotel. Refuse it. We actually left a night early to Newport because we were so sick of it. Get Away Today said they could change our hotel that first night, but recommended switching rooms instead, which I really didn’t like. So we did that. They said the other hotel they could change us to was pretty far away, which we then would have had to figure out transportation or parking to get to the parks. It was so frustrating!

We were told that many of the hotels in walking distance from the park (ours was directly across the street) are horrible like that. We did find out that The Marriot hotel there was wonderful, highly recommended, and only a bit further so walking COULD still be an option, or you could get other transportation. I would rather deal with parking than a bad hotel again. We were Disney-newbies, what are you gonna do?!

What is your #1 tip?

Mindful Monday: Purposeful Planner

Mindfulness: being present in every moment, without judgement.

One of my favorite quotes to live by. Over the past year, I have been practicing mindfulness in ways that work for me. Something I have needed for awhile was a good planner to help me stay mindful. I needed something that would ease my anxiety and stress by keeping my thoughts and my life as organized as possible. I tried a few different planners and they never were enough. I tried several bullet journals but they were too much for me to do and I found myself stressing over creating it. Not helpful.

When I found Corie Clark planners, I was really hopeful they would be what I have been needing. When I first got my planner, I was really excited looking through it thinking “this is perfect!” And that it is! I did not realize how helpful it would become though.

The Corie Clark planners are all about living your life on purpose, simply. That sounds just like something I would love! These planners include 18 months chock-full of good stuff to not only keep you organized, but help you remain mindful and stress-free! There are sheets for goals, menu planning, budget, a task list, and daily plan-sheets that have everything you could ever possibly need to track!

These planners have helped me stay on top of menu planning and grocery shopping. They have made it incredibly simple to track my water intake, my to-do lists, even my monthly dreams and goals. It’s so important to keep track of all these things, but without the right way to do it all, it can be stressful to figure out the best way to stay on top of things.

Another thing I love so much about my purposeful planner, is that it goes along with a minimalist lifestyle. This planner truly is my key to staying organized and on top of things.

Self-Care Sunday

You all know how much I love to talk about self-care and self-love, because it is so important and so often forgotten. Self-care can be so simple, yet still have such a huge impact on how you feel each day. Suffering from post partum anxiety and depression has taught me that, and it has deeply been ingrained in me.

I went a really long time not taking care of myself, and always putting myself last. I know this is the case for so many moms, and it really doesn’t work so well. I have learned to work in little things throughout my day and routine to practice self-care that I need. It really is the little things that add up and make a huge impact on us.

One of my favorite self-care steps is exfoliating. It’s so simple, but it makes my skin feel and smell so good and it’s just the little something I need sometimes! I exfoliate 2-3 times a week using Ili Scrub Coffee Scrub. This stuff is made in Hawaii using organic local coffee, organic coconut oil, organic sugar, Hawaiian sea salt, essential oils, and vitamin e. They are pure, and natural which I LOVE, and they smell incredible! I wish I could have you all smell my bags right now, they are so so good. My personal favorite is the coconut cacao coffee scrub. It smells go amazing, and is so great for your skin. Cacao + coconut + exfoliating to me is just brilliant because they all have such great benefits.

Cacao protects against free radicals, is full of magnesium, omega fatty acids, and vitamin c to promote cell repair and blood flow. Coconut is high in protein, super moisturizing, and has anti-inflammatory properties. Exfoliation removes old skin cells, revealing the glowy, newer skin underneath. It also encouraged cell regeneration, causing your cells to turn over quicker.

I love exfoliating in the shower, and when I exfoliate my face, I like to use a mask after because I know my skin is going to absorb it so much better!

Cheers to self-care, the little things, and a Sunday well-spent.
